Starting your career is one of the most formative periods in life. It’s a time when confidence, ambition, and mindset can shape your future. At 22, I believed I was worth $1,000 a day — not as a fantasy, but as a standard I was determined to achieve. That mindset guided my first professional journey and taught me lessons that I still carry today.

Discovering the Opportunity
One day, while browsing a newspaper, I came across a job listing that immediately caught my eye. A Canadian startup collection agency was hiring collectors to recover debts bought from U.S. banks at a steep discount. The job promised a base salary plus commission — with no limit. For a young professional with drive, this was a golden opportunity.
The job was located near Brentwood Mall, and I soon found myself joining as the third hire in a department of just four people. The company was small but ambitious, and I knew this environment would push me to grow quickly.
Diving Into the Work
From the very first day, I focused entirely on the work. No gossip, no unnecessary chatter — just results. The CEO was a reserved, serious figure who rarely smiled or interacted with employees. Initially, it felt intimidating, but I realized I didn’t need anyone’s approval to succeed; I just needed to focus on my goals and performance.
The business model was remarkable. Even after paying employees’ wages and covering operational costs, the company was making about 90% profit. This meant every successful collection I made directly contributed to the company’s bottom line, which motivated me to push even harder.
Building a Mindset of Excellence
Working at a startup taught me the value of discipline and resilience. Every call I made, every account I recovered, was an opportunity to prove my worth. I approached each day with a single-minded focus: exceed expectations, learn fast, and never let distractions slow me down.
Even though I was young and inexperienced, I refused to think small. I believed in my ability to perform at a high level and set ambitious goals for myself. That $1,000 a day mindset was more than a number — it was a symbol of confidence, ambition, and self-worth.
Recognition That Meant the World
After six months, my efforts caught the CEO’s attention. He called me into his office to ask how I was collecting as much as the entire branch, which by then had grown to eight people. The recognition was more than just praise — it was a rare affirmation for someone like me, who had grown up with little acknowledgment for hard work or achievement.
That moment reinforced a key lesson: consistent effort and focus lead to recognition, even when it feels like no one is watching. It also showed me that believing in your value is not arrogance — it’s the foundation for success.
Key Lessons from My First Job
Believe in your worth. Know what you bring to the table and pursue opportunities that reflect it.
Focus on results, not distractions. Avoid gossip and unnecessary chatter; let your performance speak.
Consistency earns recognition. Delivering consistently exceptional results will get noticed.
Early experiences shape your mindset. Habits and values formed at the start of your career have a lasting impact.
Ambition fuels growth. Setting high standards for yourself drives learning and performance faster than comfort ever will.
Reflections on Growth
Looking back, my time at the startup collection agency was transformative. It wasn’t just about the numbers I collected or the recognition I received — it was about developing a mindset of excellence that continues to guide me in every career move. I learned to approach challenges with confidence, to focus relentlessly on results, and to value my own worth in every professional setting.
This journey taught me that early career choices, even in small or unconventional companies, can shape your trajectory. Believing in yourself, working with focus, and aiming high can open doors that others may not even see.
