Balancing Culture, Career, and Self

Updated: Oct 6

Growing up in a Punjabi household comes with a clear set of cultural expectations, especially for women. Traditions like the Tiso chair symbolize the roles women are expected to fulfill after marriage — mastering household skills, maintaining appearances, and upholding cultural values. Skills like making Roti or managing domestic responsibilities are often emphasized as essential for any traditional Punjabi wife.

Yet, as society evolves, a tension arises. Families often desire a daughter-in-law who honors tradition, while also expecting her to be financially independent, career-driven, and successful. Balancing these two seemingly contradictory worlds can be challenging, both emotionally and practically.

Personal Experiences: Navigating Expectations

Personally, I’ve experienced the weight of these expectations. Societal pressures about appearance, household responsibilities, and “being the perfect daughter-in-law” were constant reminders of the cultural standard. At the same time, the drive for financial independence and professional success created an internal conflict. How could I honor tradition without sacrificing my own ambitions?

Moving from Surrey to California back to Surrey marked a major turning point. Exposure to a more diverse and professional environment introduced me to new ways of thinking. Being around doctors, entrepreneurs, and other professionals provided a fresh perspective, highlighting the contrast between traditional norms and modern realities. It became clear that cultural practices could be respected without limiting personal growth or independence.

Lessons Learned

  1. Respect Tradition, But Define Your Path. Cultural practices carry value, but they should never restrict your personal or professional journey.

  2. Balance Appearance and Ambition. Taking care of yourself and honoring family expectations is compatible with pursuing career goals.

  3. Diversity Broadens Perspective. Being around different cultures and professional environments helps challenge outdated norms.

  4. Independence is Empowering. Financial and personal autonomy gives women the freedom to navigate life confidently while respecting their roots.

  5. Embrace Both Worlds. Living between tradition and modern independence doesn’t mean compromising; it means blending the best of both to create your own path.

Final Thoughts

Balancing traditional expectations with modern independence is an ongoing journey. It requires self-awareness, confidence, and the courage to question old beliefs while honoring cultural heritage. By embracing both tradition and independence, women can build fulfilling lives that respect their roots without being confined by them.
